We are excited to share that Freezz has secured a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to advance our Friisat satellite constellation system for Broadband direct-to-mobile communication!
Operating in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), Friisat’s satellites bring in the sky the most advanced digital communication technologies to dynamically augment the coverage and the capacity of the terrestrial mobile wireless network, where is needed the most.
With the support of ESA’s Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications, the Swiss Space Office (SSO) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), we’re accelerating our scalable, affordable solution to tap a €100B+ market opportunity. In-orbit testing is set for early 2027, paving the way for ubiquitous, sustainable connectivity by 2029.
Friisat satellites will carry a regenerative NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) payload fully aligned with 3GPP-NTN standards, ensuring seamless integration with modern 5G networks. Moreover, the system will provide backward compatibility to support existing non-NTN user equipment (UEs) from legacy 4G and 5G devices, significantly broadening service accessibility.
Leveraging advanced proprietary solutions, Friisat achieves very high performance and energy efficiency, while at the same time minimizing the overall implementation and exploitation cost. The innovative architecture and DSP design enables high-throughput, very low-latency communication while maintaining optimized power consumption and a future-proof architecture.
Developed in partnership with a group of innovative companies and research centers – including Celeste Space, Ingeniars, RF Microtech, Maiolini Space Systems, SpacePNT, Celeste Global, Almatech and Politecnico di Torino – and in collaboration with various MNOs, Friisat solution combines a set of novel technologies in the communication payload and the satellite platform to achieve outstanding performances. The project is made possible through ESA’s Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) Competitiveness & Growth programme, which supports the European and Canadian space industry in the development of key technologies.
Featuring a very scalable architecture and easy to integrate with the terrestrial networks, Friisat offers an ideal solution to augment coverage and capacity in small regions or entire countries and is the natural solution for an effective enhancement of existing terrestrial networks to provide better services and enable innovative applications.
